What are invisible braces?
Invisible braces, which are otherwise known as clear aligners, are an orthodontic treatment used to straighten teeth. These 3D-printed, translucent plastic retainers are worn constantly, except when eating or drinking (water is fine).
Clear aligners have several advantages, including the lack of bulk of traditional metal braces, their transparency and that they are contoured to the shape of your teeth. They are thin enough to be basically invisible in normal conversation and photos.
Who can wear clear aligners?
Because these aligners are designed to be worn day and night for best results, they are most appropriate for adults, who are more likely to ensure they remain on. If they aren’t worn as prescribed, they won’t produce the desired results.
The trade-off for being so transparent is that the force applied by clear aligners on teeth is different to that of traditional metal braces. They are best used for correcting minor issues, such as mildly crooked, protruding or gappy teeth. They aren’t necessarily an appropriate dental treatment for fixing larger orthodontic issues, such as a substantial overbite.
How are invisible braces fitted?
At your free initial consultation, we’ll sit down with you and discuss your desires and expectations, as well as the cost and payment plan options available.
We have a range of interest free options if you require.
At your second appointment, we take 3D scans of your mouth, which are then used to create your custom clear aligners. These scans are also used to track the movement of your teeth over the course of the treatment.
Your dentist will then do a thorough examination of the scans and formulate a plan specifically tailored to your teeth.
Once your invisible braces are ready, we’ll have you back in to the clinic to go over everything you need to know about using and maintaining your aligners at home. Then you’re ready to begin!
Should invisible braces ever be taken out?
It is extremely important that your invisible braces are worn all day and night, although there are a few occasions when it’s necessary to remove them.
We ask that you remove your invisible braces:
-
When you brush your teeth
-
When you eat
-
When you floss
The general rule of thumb is to ensure you wear your invisible braces at least 22 hours a day.
What are the benefits or clear aligners?
Subtlety
We all desire straight teeth and a smile to be proud of without the bulky metal of traditional braces. Not only are clear aligners transparent, they’re also contoured to the natural shape of your teeth so that they’re hardly noticeable during conversation or when smiling.
Convenience
Oral hygiene is easy with clear aligners – simply pop them out and brush and floss as normal. Just be sure to put them back in once you’re done! As long as you wear them at least 22 hours a day, you’ll achieve the desired results.
Simply treatment
The process of having invisible braces fitted is less time consuming and simpler than traditional metal braces. The price is often less, as well. Some private health insurers also provide some cover. As always, if you’re interested in interest-free payment plans, please talk to our friendly team.
